Rogers' Hardscape Pros

A Backyard Transformation

Posted: March 15, 2009

Hardscape products can help homeowners maximize backyard space. In this month's project profile, we're looking at a project in St. Paul, Minn. that turned a small, grass-covered backyard into a patio and seating area perfect for enjoying the outdoors.

The homeowners wanted a backyard that they could enjoy during the summer months for cooking and entertaining, and they also wanted to increase the property value of their home. The original landscape had a cramped concrete patio, a grass lot and a cracked, poured-concrete walkway leading from the detached garage to the back door. Also, the home is located on a slope, and the homeowners wanted a patio that would level out the yard.

I came up with a design that uses the Anchor™ Diamond Stone Cut™ wall system. An update of the classic Anchor™ Diamond® block with a rough-hewn face, the Diamond Stone Cut product is an attractive, sturdy block.

One of the challenges of working on this project was the need to flatten out the fairly steep grade. Using the Diamond Stone Cut product allowed me to define the edge of a low paver patio while retaining the higher slope at the west edge of the yard. I also extended the retaining wall along the property line at the edge of the house.

I incorporated a circle kit into the paver patio for a table and chairs with a spot for the grill off to the side. A planting area between the patio and retaining wall and lots of planting space above the wall again added coziness. The patio included a paver walkway that extended from the garage to the back door of the house.

This was a satisfying project because we were able to change a small, underdeveloped yard into a functional and attractive patio where the homeowners will be able to cook and entertain. When done, it really looked fantastic!
